Tim M. Sportschuetz, a former general contractor and developer, leads a team of dedicated Vancouver construction lawyers.
Tim M. Sportschuetz is a general contractor turned construction lawyer. With over seven years of on-the-ground heavy civil construction experience and having managed and completed a number of residential gut-renovation projects himself, Tim has a unique industry background that can be developed only through years of on-site experience. Combined with focused construction law and builders’ lien knowledge coupled with the Osgoode Hall Law School Certification in Construction Law, Tim is especially well-equipped to protect the legal interests of your construction business.
Prior to founding Sportschuetz & Company Law Corporation, Vancouver’s top-ranked construction law firm made up of a team of construction lawyers focused entirely on service excellence, Tim developed his construction legal skills under some of the brightest and well-respected construction lawyers in Canada. Tim practiced under the tutelage of an esteemed team of construction lawyers at a boutique construction law firm. Thereafter he practiced construction law in the Construction and Infrastructure Group of a leading national construction law firm.
Tim’s construction industry network is vast. He is a former director of the Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) and British Columbia Construction Association (BCCA), the largest construction associations in British Columbia and the collective voice of the provincial construction industry. Tim was also the British Columbia representative of the Canadian Construction Association’s National Advisory Council (CCA) and an executive member of the British Columbia Construction Roundtable (BCCR). From his municipal, provincial, and national industry positions, Tim benefits from an exceedingly deep industry network that enables him to offer insightful and specialized construction legal advice.
For seven years, Tim was vice president of operations to a civil earthworks and infrastructure general contractor, overseeing projects valued up to $17 million. He understands how projects are bid, costed, and managed. Tim frequently registers and enforces builders liens, using every available procedure and remedy under the British Columbia Builders Lien Act. Tim knows first-hand about the often complex on-site flow of information and documentation and the way paperwork and costing documents pass through the construction project pyramid. His heavy equipment, civil earthworks, and general contracting experience imparts Tim with a unique understanding of operational and financial aspects of construction projects, ranging from procurement and costing issues, crane swing agreements, underpinning agreements, out-of-scope work, as well as payment bond, performance bond, and builders lien bond matters. Tim relies on his unique understanding and first-hand knowledge of on-site issues to conceive legal strategies that protect and advance every clients’ legal and business interests.
Tim is a contributor and co-author of the British Columbia Builders Liens Practice Manual, frequently publishes construction legal articles in trade magazines, and has been interviewed by The Globe and Mail on various topics, including the novel integrated project delivery procurement method. Tim is also the sole legal contributor to the British Columbia Construction Association Guide to the Closeout of Construction Contracts & Projects.
Tim is an in-demand and frequent guest on popular Canadian construction law and industry podcasts. From his perspective as construction lawyer, he discusses topics such as commercial real estate, construction legal issues, construction contract drafting, builders liens registration and enforcement, and crane-swing and underpinning agreements. Tim appeared on the Vancouver Commercial Real Estate Podcast providing insights into the hidden world of commercial, construction law, and real estate development. Tim was also a guest on the popular The Site Visit Podcast discussing construction law principles and the most suitable time at which a contractor might want to retain qualified construction legal counsel or construction law firm. Most recently, Tim joined a panel of esteemed industry representatives at Buildex 2024, discussing British Columbia’s ongoing efforts to introduce prompt payment legislation.
